My Background
boys with hearing aids from the 70s
I was born with a bilateral severe sensorineural hearing loss and have worn hearing aids since I was three years old.  I grew up in Wisconsin and was mainstreamed into the public schools my entire life.  I was the only student in my school  who wore hearing aids and I often felt isolated and different.  When I was in high school I knew I wanted to work with hard of hearing students.

After high school, I moved to Minnesota to attend Macalester College in St. Paul.  While at Macalester I received my license in Elementary Education.  I also designed a major that allowed me to focus my coursework on my favorite subject, Deaf/Hard of Hearing issues.  After getting my bachelor's degree at Macalester, I  attended the University of Minnesota and received my Masters of Education in Deaf Education.

Based on my experiences, both as an individual with a hearing loss and as a teacher for children with hearing loss, I put a lot of emphasis on compensatory skills.  It is my goal to help hard of hearing students gain the confidence and skills needed to become their own self-advocates.
