KINDERGARTEN NEWS
MARCH, 2007
We've had a great month. The children are learning a lot! I'm very proud of them and the great progress they are making on letter sounds and reading words. We've been practicing how many sounds we can say in 1 minute. In May, when the students are tested again, the district would like kindergartners to do 30 - 40 sounds in one minute. Keep practicing!
Rochelle, a clay artist from Northern Clay Center came and worked with the kindergarten classes. Each class spent 50 min. a day with her for one week. They learned about clay, had time to practice techniques she taught them and made an animal and a pot. They were able to put glaze on their pots and then Rochelle will fire them in the kiln and we will have a gallery walk of their final products in the lunchroom on Thursday.
In reading, we met five more High Hat friends: Vernon and Vera, Ooky Ook, Awesome Auto, Thelma Thumb and Shy Shadow. We use sound boxes to help us write words. We listen for the beginning, middle and ending sounds as we write the word. We have now learned 21 words. We use these words as we practice reading sentences along with early emergent leveled books.
In math, we are working on addition and subtraction number stories. At one of the centers this week, the children are using teddy bear counters and a picture of a house to create different stories. Then they have to write the number sentence that goes with the story.
